In 1942, Canada and the United States agreed to build the Alaska Highway. It was designed to help defend the Isolated American territory and the Northwest Staging Route, a series of airstrips in British Columbia, the Yukon, and Alaska.

Construction began on March 8th, 1942 with the arrival of the 341st regiment of the U.S. Corp. of Engineers at Dawson Creek. In less than nine months, the pioneer road was complete and the official opening ceremony took place on November 20, 1942. In 1946, the American military turned the highway over to Canada.
